Professional Bio

Srinivasa N. Raja, M.D. is Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurology and Director of Pain Research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a clinician-scientist, educator and health-care advocate in the pain field, and a dedicated member of the IASP for nearly four decades.  

Dr. Raja was as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the World Congress on Pain from 2008-12 and was appointed Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the 15th World Congress on Pain, Buenos Aires, 2014.  He was elected as the Secretary of the IASP and served on its Executive Committee from 2014-16. He was the Chair of NeuPSIG from 2014-16. His other significant leadership role was as Chair of the IASP task force on the definition of pain (2018-2020) that resulted in the revised IASP definition of pain (2020). He presently serves as the Chair of the Educational Programs Working Group to help coordinate IASP’s educational programs globally.  
Dr. Raja was a member of the Editorial Board of PAIN from 1999-2009 and served as a Section Editor, Clinical Sciences for the journal from 2012- 2014. He has played key roles in educating pain practitioners in developing nations developed the Curriculum for a highly successful multi-session Pain Camp (2017) held at two different cities in India. He has trained hundreds of fellows in pain medicine at Johns Hopkins and mentored nearly 30 post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty. 
Dr. Raja was a member of the FDA scientific advisory panel for CDER (Center for Drug Evaluation and Research) He was appointed as a member of the U.S. Federal Pain Research Strategy Steering Committee, 2015 that was charged with coordinating the research efforts in the field of pain across all US federal funding agencies. He was appointed in 2019 as a member of The Committee on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, USA. 

Dr. Raja and his collaborators have published more than 210 original articles in peer-reviewed journals.  He is an editor of five textbooks related to pain medicine.  His awards include the Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award from the American Pain Society (2008), the John J. Bonica Award from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (2010), and the John J. Bonica Distinguished Lecture Award, IASP 2021 virtual World Congress on Pain. In 2022, Dr. Raja was awarded Honorary Memberships to the IASP and NeuPSIG.
