Ulrike Bingel is a neurologist by background, Professor of Clinical Neuroscience and director of the interdisciplinary pain center at University Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. She performed her residency training at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf where she founded her BMBF funded research group on pain and pain modulation. From 2008 to 2009 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain. Being particularly intrigued by the reciprocal effects of pain and cognition, her interdisciplinary research group has a strong focus on translational questions such as the role of expectations and prior experiences on analgesic treatment outcomes. Since 2020 she is speaker of the transregional collaborative research center 289 ‘Treatment expectation’ funded by the German Research foundation.
